How long do you have to respond to a demand for a Bill of Particulars in New York?

The answer
Under CPLR 3042(a), a party served with a demand for a Bill of Particulars must serve the bill within 30 days of service of the demand. If an item in the demand is improper, the party objects to that item in the bill itself and states the reason with reasonable particularity; a separate motion to vacate is no longer the route. A late or missing bill exposes the plaintiff to a motion under CPLR 3042(c) and (d), including preclusion, so the practical deadline is the calendar date 30 days out, not the date the case manager gets to it.

If the demand is improper
Object in the bill, item by item, with the reason stated with reasonable particularity. The demanding party's remedy is then a motion to compel under 3042(c), and the court rules on the objection there.
